My Busy Hands: a blog on knitting, crochet & life w/autism

It had to happen someday….

I made it down to the heel flap on Patriotic Betsy Sock #1 and was a few inches down the leg of sock #2 when I put my knitting down this morning and came downstairs to check the computer.  About 30 minutes later, I hear my husband ask S “S what are you doing with mommy’s knitting?  Did you unravel that?”

*sigh*

I ran upstairs to a pile of unraveled yarn and my dpns scattered around the living room floor.  :(  It had to happen sometime – I think it does to everyone who knits with small kids in the house.    At least it wasn’t the other sock that is about 7″ long….

I’ve also been working on cotton dishcloths that I’m planning on putting up in my etsy store once I crochet up a big enough selection to be interesting to anyone.  Here is one of the patterns I’ve been playing with that I really like:

  1. Sorry to hear about the lost work. It is really annoying to restitch something again, and yarn once used can be fractious about getting restitched.

But it is fun to unravel knitting! It makes such a neat ziiiiiipppp feeling, like running a stick down a picket fence. And here’s this small object that just produces arm-length after arm-length of string — amazing!

My mom knitted. I don’t quite knit yet; someday I’ll get past the cast-on and knit stages to get purling down. I do remember spending many happy hours with an unwanted ball of yarn, winding it around and between different furniture legs and knobs and handles all around my room in a giant spiderweb effect. It was SO MUCH FUN! (And boy did it make my mom pissed. I’ve no idea why — I said I’d undo it when I was done.)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  2. Andrea,
I’m guessing that it felt really really good to frog all that knitting!

Too funny about you and yarn and your mom. I could picture my boys enjoying spinning their own webs too. :D

I decided that since he is so interested in it that he and I would work on a scarf together. So, this morning, I got out some chunky yarn and size 17 needles, had him sit between my legs and knitted a couple of rows hand-over-hand with him. He was *so* proud of himself! :D It will be a long time until he has enough motor control to do it himself, but anything that gets him practicing with fine motor skills is a good thing. And I’d rather have him focusing on knitting, rather than ripping out. ;)

    cheers,
    elaine

  3. Oh no! That stinks. Did the socks call for a technique that you were learning? If they did, you’ll at least get another shot at practicing the technique…

  4. You know, I believe I could put him to go use with this new skill ;-) . I’ve been doing a ton of frogging lately with learning to knit lace… Its such a bother to do. Perhaps I should just send him my work, lol.

Please hug those little men for me!
